Warnings/Gimmicks
When you look for insurance coverage don’t make the two very common mistakes that many people make---they only pay attention to the cost of the monthly premium and they fail to select an agent they can talk with and can trust.
The true cost of your health insurance lies both in cost (total of monthly premiums, annual deductibles, co-pays for visits, prescriptions, other services) as well as benefit limitations. For example: must you meet the annual deductible before you see a specialist? Is there a separate co-pay for medications? Are you covered up to a certain limit per year? What is the true cost of outpatient surgery? For tests?
Unless you have a complete understanding of your plan you probably won’t get the full benefits a plan should offer you.
For both health and life insurance: is your plan portable---can you take it with you, or is it tied to your current job? If it is tied to your job you have a serious restriction.
Websites for comparing costs can be useful, but they often are gimmicks for buying coverage that is either limited or that is not well understood. Besides, who will you call if you buy a policy on-line and there are problems with it later? That’s why you need to take the time to find a good, reliable and knowledgeable agent. Once you do, you will keep going back for answers and help as your needs change.
